"thank u, next" by Ariana Grande

Hey Blazers!

This month we have the very popular song "thank u, next" by Ariana Grande. Yes, it is the clean version. I am not a fan of Ariana Grande myself, but I have a high interest in this song. One reason being she is thankful for her past and ready to endure her future.

Released on November 3, 2018, "thank u, next" became an immediate success. It became Grande's first single hitting number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It broke the record of most plays on Spotify by a female artist in one day.

(Verse 1)

Thought I'd end up with Sean But he wasn't a match Wrote some songs about Ricky Now I listen and laugh Even almost got married And for Pete, I'm so thankful Wish I could say, "Thank you" to Malcolm 'Cause he was an angel

The first verse talks about Grande's past relationships with people. Sean is Big Sean. The two ended due to busy schedules but they seem to be on good terms still. Ricky is Ricky Alvarez whom she dated for about a year. Though neither one of them have stated why they split, Grande seemed really glad for it. Next came Malcolm McCormick, aka Mac Miller. Their relationship together was strong, as you can tell by the song. He passed due to an overdose. This affected Grande severely because they were once in love. He was her angel that she couldn't see. Pete Davidson was next on her list. They dated for a short time and evidently got engaged. They broke up some time after, with rumors being because of the death of Mac. With each and every guy she has dated, she was thankful for because she learned so much about not only herself but others as well.

(Verse 2)

One taught me love One taught me patience And one taught me pain Now, I'm so amazing I've loved and I've lost But that's not what I see So, look what I got Look what you taught me And for that, I say

Grande begins this verse talking about the lessons she learned from each. 'Love' I believe being Davidson, 'patience' being Sean, and 'pain' being Miller due to his death. She talks about how she is amazing, meaning she is beginning to believe in herself. 'I've loved and I've lost' referring to her past relationships ending. 'Look what you taught me' meaning she DID learn from her past and is ready to use that in her future.

Thank you, next (next) Thank you, next (next) Thank you, next I'm so, I'm so grateful for my ex Thank you, next (next) Thank you, next (next) Thank you, next (next) I'm so, I'm so

She is saying thank you to her past. She is grateful for her exes and what each specific one has taught her. Saying 'next' is implying that she is ready to move on and begin a new chapter in her life.

(Verse 3)

Spend more time with my friends I ain't worried 'bout nothin' Plus, I met someone else We havin' better discussions I know they say I move on too fast But this one gon' last 'Cause her name is Ari And I'm so good with that (so good with that)

She's going out more and enjoying herself. She isn't isolating herself after her breakups and losses. 'I met someone else/... her name is Ari' shows how she is becoming more aware of herself. She is growing in confidence and she doesn't need a man to be happy.

(Verse 4)

She taught me love (love)

She taught me patience (patience)

How she handles pain (pain)

That is amazing (yeah, she's amazing)

I've loved and I've lost (yeah, yeah)

But that's not what I see (yeah, yeah)

'Cause look what I've found (yeah, yeah)

Ain't no need for searching, and for that, I say

Grande is learning more about herself and what she likes. She is taking the time to understand herself and her personal needs. She spends her time focused on herself and not guys.

(Verse 5)

One day I'll walk down the aisle Holding hands with my mama I'll be thanking my dad 'Cause she grew from the drama Only wanna do it once, real bad Gon' make that stuff last God forbid something happens Least this song is a smash (song is a smash)

Grande knows one day she will get married. She wants to, nonetheless. She doesn't want to get a divorce and only wants to marry once. She knows problems can be solved and so anything can last. In the last two lines, she knows that if she can't get her happy ending, her song was a hit anyways.

(Verse 6)

I've got so much love (love) Got so much patience (patience) I've learned from the pain (pain) I turned out amazing (turned out amazing) I've loved and I've lost (yeah, yeah) But that's not what I see (yeah, yeah) 'Cause look what I've found (yeah, yeah)

Ain't no need for searching

And for that, I'll say

She has learned how to love, how to be patient, and what pain is all through her learning experiences. She knows she isn't perfect but she's learned a lot from her failed lovers.
