March 10, 1876: The first words ever transmitted by telephone are spoken.

"On this day, the first discernible speech is transmitted over a telephone system when inventor Alexander Graham Bell summons his assistant in another room by saying, 'Mr. Watson, come here; I want you.' Bell had received a comprehensive telephone patent just three days before."

March 11, 2009: Toyota sells 1 millionth hybrid in U.S.

"The Toyota Motor Company announces on this day in 2009 that it has sold over 1 million gas-electric hybrid vehicles in the U.S. under its six Toyota and Lexus brands. The sales were led by the Prius, the world’s first mass-market hybrid car, which was launched in Japan in October 1997 and introduced in America in July 2000."

March 12, 1938: Germany annexes Austria.

"On March 12, 1938, German troops march into Austria to annex the German-speaking nation for the Third Reich. In early 1938, Austrian Nazis conspired for the second time in four years to seize the Austrian government by force and unite their nation with Nazi Germany."

March 13, 1969: Disney's “The Love Bug” opens in theaters.

"On this day in 1969, “The Love Bug,” a Walt Disney movie about the adventures of a Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie, opens in theaters across the United States."

March 14, 1919: Max Brand publishes his first novel, The Untamed.

"Max Brand, perhaps the most prolific writer of western stories, publishes his first novel, The Untamed. Max Brand was one of 21 pen names used by the Seattle-born author Frederick Faust."

March 15, 44 B.C.: The Ides of March.

"Gaius Julius Caesar, dictator of Rome, is stabbed to death in the Roman Senate house by 60 conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus."

March 16, 1926: First liquid-fueled rocket is launched.

"The first man to give hope to dreams of space travel is American Robert H. Goddard, who successfully launches the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket at Auburn, Massachusetts, on March 16, 1926. The rocket traveled for 2.5 seconds at a speed of about 60 mph."
