Kirby's Epic Yarn: An Arts & Crafts Wonderland
There are many iconic video game characters out there. One instantly recognizable character is Kirby! Anyone who lives outside of a rock knows about the Pink Puffball. Games like Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby Super Star have gone down as being some of the greatest games of their time, but some great Kirby games have gone by silently. One of these games is Kirby's Epic Yarn, released for the Nintendo Wii in 2010!
The first thing you'll notice about the game is that it doesn't look like how most Kirby games look - this one's made out of crafts! The whole game is made out of different fabrics and materials, and it all looks fantastic! Things like drums, giant cakes, volcanoes, and staples of the Kirby series like the Battleship Halberd have all been turned into yarn, buttons, cotton, lace, and more! One of the most genius things about the game is how the player can interact with all of those things. Kirby can use buttons to swing high into the sky and wind enemies up into a ball of yarn that can be thrown at other obstacles. One of the most memorable examples of how Kirby can interact with the world takes place at a level on the beach. When the level starts, it's nighttime on the beach; everyone you walk past is asleep and the music that is playing is very subdued and calming. After you climb up into the clouds, you encounter the Moon, which of course is made out of fabric. There is a tag hanging off of the Moon that you can pull, and when you do, the Moon peels away and reveals the Sun underneath it! The whole level instantly comes to life with very upbeat music and tons of Waddle-Dees who have awoken to spend a wonderful day on the coast! Things like that are scattered all throughout the game, and make Kirby's Epic Yarn one of the most charming and creative gaming experiences ever!
If you're the type of person that needs loads of challenge to stay interested in a game, then Kirby's Epic Yarn is not the game for you. It is very hard to die in this game, well actually, it's impossible to! This game has no life bar, hearts, or anything like that. No matter how many times Kirby is hit by enemies, he will never die. This lack of difficulty might come as a shock to some people, but it is a welcome addition to the game. Kirby's Epic Yarn wouldn't be as good if it were more difficult. Because the player doesn't need to worry about lives or anything, they can relax and just simply enjoy the game, and trust me - there's a lot to enjoy! And if you do need just a little bit of a challenge, this game can provide that in the form of beads! Beads are scattered copiously throughout each level, and the more you collect, the more rewards you receive. If you collect a certain amount of beads, you can unlock bronze, silver, and gold medals for each stage, and sometimes even bonus levels! But watch out - if Kirby is hit by an enemy, he drops some beads, so make sure to always be aware of your surroundings! So all-in-all, this game provides much more charm than challenge...and the music helps keep that charm alive!
There's only one way to put this, the Kirby's Epic Yarn soundtrack absolutely RULES! This piano-heavy soundtrack works so well within and without the game. Songs like "Mushroom Run", "Rainbow Falls", and "Big Bean Vine" can instantly brighten up your day, and Kirby classics like "Green Greens" and "Bubbly Clouds" have been upgraded with flutes, guitars, all sorts of percussion, piano, and more! If the visuals of the game don't keep you playing, then the music definitely will! The music creates such a calming and peaceful atmosphere that makes you just want to hang out with Kirby all day. Go ahead and listen to some of the soundtrack right now, I'm sure you'll love it!
There's really nothing not to love about Kirby's Epic Yarn. It is the perfect game if you want to unwind and relax, or if you just want a more calming gaming experience. Some might claim that the game is a kid's game, but that's not true. With the extremely creative art style and game design, satisfying gameplay, and melodic and peaceful soundtrack, this game is perfect for anyone young or old! And if you don't have a Wii or Wii U to play it on, don't worry! A port of the game, titled Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, was released on the 3DS not too long ago!
Want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Play Kirby's Epic Yarn, and experience an adventure you won't soon forget!
